Still Learning
I jumped in the car to get groceries to make dinner to welcome new neighbors. On the drive there, all of a sudden I heard all this beeping because the light was green and I was busy listening to music. Then I saw the man who had beeped at me in the parking lot. I apologized and gave excuses about being eighty-three. He was probably in his 40’s. He started yelling at me that I need to pay attention! He ran into the store. He must have been in a hurry.
Him yelling reminded me of my mom. My mom faithfully went to church when we all lived in Cape Coral. She was over eighty-one years old. One time on her way to church she blocked the left lane by just stopping. The police came and asked what was wrong. She said: I can’t see! They asked why she was driving. Again she said: I can’t see! The police officer saw that the window was fogged so he put the defrost button on and the window cleared. My mother never drove again because she was so humiliated.
In my situation, I wanted to get my point across to the man who shouted. So I wasn’t feeling humiliated, but more perplexed. I’m still learning. Meaning I do know I need to pay better attention at red lights without music blaring in the car with the windows closed.
