Serenity Prayer

When I lived in London during the 1980’s and went to Al-Anon meetings there, I was surprised to learn that Higher Power or HP meant many different things to many different people. For example, a HP can be a person’s highest self. People can actually choose their Higher Power. There’s no right or wrong HP. So a Higher Power doesn't have to be God. 

When we say the Serenity Prayer, people can use the word God, the word it, some other word, or leave the God-word out. This makes the Serenity Prayer more inclusive.

God (or something else), grant me the serenity

to accept the things I cannot change,

the courage to change the things I can,

And the wisdom to know the difference. 

Sometimes I say this too: And the wisdom to keep it that simple.
