Powerlessness

My thoughts and feelings become unmanageable when I think I have power. I am powerless over people, places, and things. Step One says: We admitted we were powerless over alcohol—that our lives had become unmanageable. The minute I know I don’t have power, my recovery begins, my healing begins again. Then this gives me power. There’s a power greater than myself. So powerlessness is valuable.

I am powerless over people, places, and things. I have to work on each part as it comes up: people, places, and things. It takes humility.

Powerlessness isn’t just about alcohol. One time I thought I had power over a legal situation. It felt satisfying, like I was winning something. That’s my dark side coming out. Then I learned I didn’t have any power to make any decisions in the situation. It became a joke on me. I never had the power in the first place! I saw the humor in it. A power greater than myself removed the stress of the situation.

Releasing power is my power. The minute I know I don’t have power, my recovery begins, my healing begins. There’s a power greater than myself. So powerlessness is valuable. I’ll be learning this and healing till the day I die.
